How a Wi-Fi QR code works
The code contains a short text string in a standard format — WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:Password;; — that phones recognize. When scanned, iOS (11 and later) and Android (10 and later) show a “Join network” prompt and connect without the user typing anything. Older Android phones need a QR app such as Google Lens.
Choose WPA for any modern router — it covers WPA2 and WPA3. WEP exists only for routers from the 2000s. For an open network with no password, pick “Open network” and leave the password blank. Tick “Hidden network” only if you disabled SSID broadcast on the router.
Where people use it
Cafés and restaurants print it on table tents and menus; short-term rentals put it in the welcome booklet; offices post a guest-network code at reception; families stick one on the fridge for visitors. Print it at least 3 cm wide with the network name written underneath so people know what they are joining.
Security: the password is inside the code
A Wi-Fi QR code stores the password as plain text. Anyone who scans it — or opens the image file — can read it with a QR reader app. That is fine for a guest network or a café, but do not post the image on social media or use it for the network your computers and cameras are on. If you change the password, print a new code; the old one simply stops working.

- Yes. The generator escapes the characters that have meaning in the format (semicolons, commas, colons, quotes, backslashes) so they scan correctly.
- Can someone see my password from the code?
- Yes, anyone who scans it with a reader app can read the password. Use it for guest networks and keep the image private.
- WPA3 isn't in the list — which option do I pick?
- Pick WPA. The QR format uses the same value for WPA, WPA2 and WPA3 networks.
